What AEO Actually Is
Three things to internalize before going further
- →AEO is not "ranking" — it's "being cited." Traditional SEO's unit of success is a position in a list of links. AEO's unit of success is being the source quoted inside an AI-generated answer, or being named in the recommendation.
- →AEO works at the fact level, not the page level. Traditional SEO optimizes a page. AEO optimizes individual passages — a single 50-word answer, a statistic with a source, an FAQ pair — because that is what AI extracts.
- →You can rank #1 on Google and still be invisible in AI search. Page-one Google ranking and AI citation correlate weakly. A page can rank 5th organically but be cited 1st in AI Overviews, and vice versa.
The bar AEO must clear
For your content to be cited, it has to be all of these things at once. Miss any one and the citation goes to a competitor.
- Crawlable by the AI engine's bot (most failures happen here, silently)
- Extractable as a self-contained answer (passage-level structure)
- Trustworthy by the engine's E-E-A-T heuristics (author, entity, citations)
- Corroborated by third-party sources the AI already trusts (Reddit, Wikipedia, G2, news media)
- Fresh enough that the engine will reuse it (especially for evolving topics)

AEO vs SEO vs GEO — Stop Confusing Them
The three terms get used interchangeably, but they aren't the same. Get the distinction right:

Why AEO Is Now Existential, Not Optional
The market has already shifted. The numbers below are why "we'll do it later" is the wrong answer:
Two implications for any new product or website
- 1.Your highest-intent buyers are no longer Googling and browsing. They're asking an AI ("best CRM for early-stage SaaS startups"). When an answer engine names two or three options, the rest don't exist for that user.
- 2.Early movers compound. AI models show a preference for sources they've cited previously, creating exponential returns for early AEO adopters. Whoever wins category citations now will be hard to dislodge later.

How Answer Engines Actually Work (RAG Explained)
You can't optimize for a system you don't understand. Here is the actual pipeline that runs every time a user asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Mode a question — known as Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG):
The five-stage pipeline
- Query understanding — The AI parses intent, context, qualifiers ("for enterprise," "in 2026"), and decomposes the prompt into sub-queries.
- Sub-query fan-out — Each sub-query is searched independently. ChatGPT uses Bing + its own SearchGPT index. Google AI Overviews use Google's index. Perplexity uses its own index plus partners.
- Content evaluation — Retrieved pages are scored for authority, relevance, recency, and factual specificity. One study found ChatGPT retrieves ~85% of pages it never cites — the citation gap is huge.
- Synthesis — The model assembles the best passages into a coherent answer. This is where structured, self-contained passages win.
- Citation selection — Only sources whose passages contributed materially to the synthesized answer get cited or have their brand named.

The two-pass model
Most answer engines run a two-pass model: a retrieval pass (which sources are even eligible) and a selection pass (which sources actually get cited). A page must clear both bars. Most sites fail on retrieval (not crawlable, not in the index, no schema). The next tier fails on selection (no Answer Capsule, no statistics, no entity authority).

Each engine weights signals differently. Optimize for the stack, but tune for platform priorities.
6.1 ChatGPT (OpenAI)

- •For Perplexity specifically: get mentioned on Reddit and review sites. It compounds fast.
6.3 Google AI Overviews & AI Mode
- •Pulls primarily from Google's existing top-10 organic results (~52% of AI Overview sources come from the top 10).
- •Strong SEO is a precondition. If you don't rank, you likely don't appear.
- •FAQPage and Article schema are the highest-leverage structured data here.
- •Google-Extended controls whether your content feeds Gemini and AI Overviews — separate from Googlebot.
- •Pages with valid structured data are 2.3× more likely to appear in AI Overviews.
6.4 Claude (Anthropic)
- •Prefers long-form, comprehensive guides over short pages.
- •Often names brands without linking URLs — track named-brand mentions, not just citations.
- •Active crawlers: ClaudeBot (training), Claude-SearchBot (search index), Claude-User (real-time).
- •Note: Claude-Web and anthropic-ai are deprecated user-agent strings. Update only those and you'll accomplish nothing.
