You can track brand mentions in ChatGPT without paying for an enterprise platform. Build a fixed set of buyer prompts, run them in clean ChatGPT sessions, and record whether your brand is mentioned, recommended, described accurately, and cited. Repeat the same test on a fixed cadence. Within an hour, you will have a useful baseline for ChatGPT brand monitoring.

Why should I track AI brand visibility at all? Because buyers can now get a shortlist without visiting ten blue links. In a 2025 analysis of 900 US adults, Pew Research Center found that people clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits with a Google AI summary, compared with 15% when no summary appeared. Links inside the summaries attracted clicks on only 1% of visits. That study measured Google rather than ChatGPT, but it shows why an AI answer itself has become a measurable discovery surface.

This guide gives you the free manual method I use to answer four questions:

  • Does ChatGPT know the brand?
  • Does it recommend the brand for relevant use cases?
  • Is the description accurate and positive?
  • Which sources does it cite when forming the answer?

If you already know you are missing from the answer, read why ChatGPT does not recommend your product. If you do not yet have a baseline, start here.

What Is AI Brand Monitoring?

AI brand monitoring is the process of measuring how often, where, and in what context a brand appears in answers from ChatGPT and other generative engines. It tracks mentions, recommendations, sentiment, factual accuracy, competitor share of voice, and citations rather than conventional search rankings alone.

Traditional brand monitoring watches news sites, social networks, forums, and unlinked web mentions. Brand monitoring for AI results asks a different question: when a buyer gives an AI engine a commercially relevant prompt, does the generated answer include your company?

That distinction matters. This guide is not about finding unlinked mentions for SEO or monitoring social chatter. It is about AI mention tracking inside generated answers.

SignalQuestion it answersExample
Mention rateDoes the model include us?Brand appears in 7 of 30 valid answers
Recommendation rateDoes it actively suggest us?"Consider Brand X for..."
Share of voiceHow visible are we beside competitors?7 of 26 tracked brand appearances
SentimentHow are we framed?Positive, neutral, or negative
AccuracyAre product facts correct?Pricing and audience are current
Citation rateDoes the answer link to evidence about us?Brand site, review, listicle, or directory

The result is your LLM visibility baseline. It will not tell you exactly how every person sees your brand, because generative answers vary. It will tell you whether visibility is improving when you hold the test conditions reasonably steady.

For the wider strategy behind earning inclusion, see the complete GEO playbook. It explains how technical access, answer-ready content, entity authority, and third-party coverage work together.

Why Track Your LLM Visibility?

You should track LLM visibility for the same reason you track rankings, branded search, reviews, or pipeline sources: what you cannot observe is hard to improve.

Useful LLM visibility tracking can reveal:

  1. Category invisibility. ChatGPT knows your company when asked by name but never includes it in unbranded recommendations.
  2. Positioning drift. The answer describes an old feature, the wrong customer, or a category you have left.
  3. Competitor dominance. The same two competitors occupy every shortlist while your brand is absent.
  4. Citation gaps. ChatGPT mentions you but cites weak, outdated, or third-party pages instead of the best available source.
  5. Reputation risk. An incorrect limitation, price, integration, or security claim keeps recurring.

The original Generative Engine Optimization study formalised visibility metrics for generated answers and reported improvements of up to 40% in its benchmark. That does not promise a 40% lift for your site. It does establish that generative visibility can be defined, measured, and influenced.

Your first audit should therefore produce a baseline, not a vanity score. After you update content, earn independent mentions, or fix crawler access, rerun the same panel. The change between comparable samples is more useful than one isolated result.

How to Track Brand Mentions in ChatGPT for Free

The free method is a small black-box experiment. You give ChatGPT a stable panel of realistic prompts, repeat each prompt, and record structured observations. If you want to monitor AI mentions free of platform fees, you do not need an API, scraper, or paid AI visibility tracking platform.

Step 1: Define the Market You Want to Measure

Write down these five inputs before opening ChatGPT:

  • Brand: the exact company or product name
  • Category: the market in which you expect to appear
  • Audience: the buyer or user ChatGPT should advise
  • Location: global, country, or city if geography affects the answer
  • Competitors: three to eight brands buyers genuinely compare

Be specific. "Best marketing software" is too broad for a seed-stage SaaS. "Best customer onboarding software for a 20-person B2B SaaS team" produces a more meaningful competitive set.

Step 2: Build a Named Prompt Panel

Create a fixed prompt set and give it a version, such as ChatGPT Visibility Panel v1 -- June 2026. A named panel prevents the test from quietly changing each month.

Use these 15 templates. Replace the text in brackets, but keep the final prompts unchanged between runs.

IntentPrompt template
Category discoveryWhat are the best [category] tools for [audience]?
Category discoveryWhich [category] platforms should a [buyer] evaluate in 2026?
Category discoveryCreate a shortlist of [category] products for a company in [location].
Problem-ledWhat tools can help [audience] solve [specific problem]?
Problem-ledHow should a [buyer] solve [problem], and which products are worth considering?
Use caseRecommend a [category] tool for [specific workflow].
Use caseWhich product is best for [use case] if I need [constraint]?
ConstraintWhat are good [category] options under [budget]?
ConstraintWhich [category] tools work well for a small team without [resource]?
AlternativesWhat are the best alternatives to [market leader]?
ComparisonCompare the leading [category] tools for [audience].
SwitchingI currently use [competitor]. What should I switch to for [reason]?
EvidenceWhich [category] products are most trusted by [audience], and why?
Branded accuracyWhat does [brand] do, who is it for, and what are its main limitations?
Branded comparisonCompare [brand] with [two real competitors] for [use case].

The first 13 prompts measure discovery. The final two diagnose what the model already believes. Do not add "include [brand]" to an unbranded prompt. That measures instruction-following, not brand presence.

This panel also answers the practical question, "What does AI say about my brand?" without relying on one flattering branded query.

Step 3: Use Clean, Consistent ChatGPT Sessions

Open a new session for every prompt. Use Temporary Chat where available. OpenAI says Temporary Chats do not use existing memories or create new ones, which reduces personalisation from earlier conversations.

Keep these conditions stable:

  • Use the same ChatGPT plan, model, and search mode.
  • Use the same country, language, and prompt wording.
  • Start every prompt in a new Temporary Chat.
  • Do not correct or coach the first answer.
  • Record the date, model label, and whether web search ran.
  • Repeat each prompt twice on different days.

When the question depends on current products, prices, or recommendations, enable Search. OpenAI's ChatGPT Search documentation confirms that searched answers can include inline citations and a source panel. Search mode makes AI citation tracking possible; a model-only answer may mention a brand without showing where the information came from.

Two runs across 15 prompts creates 30 observations. That is enough for a directional baseline while still being realistic for a free manual audit. Do not run a prompt repeatedly until your brand appears. That is selection bias wearing a spreadsheet.

Step 4: Record Every Answer in a Scoring Sheet

Create one row per answer. A basic Google Sheet or Excel file is enough.

ColumnWhat to record
Date2026-06-21
EngineChatGPT
Model/modeModel label + Search on/off
MarketCountry and language
Prompt IDCAT-01, ALT-01, etc.
PromptExact wording
Brand mentioned?1 for yes, 0 for no
Recommended?1 for an active recommendation, 0 otherwise
PositionFirst, second, third, later, or absent
SentimentPositive, neutral, negative, or mixed
Description accurate?Accurate, partly accurate, or inaccurate
Brand domain cited?1 or 0
Third-party citation?Source name and URL
Competitors mentionedComma-separated names
ScreenshotFile or cloud link
NotesWrong price, missing feature, unusual claim, etc.

Keep screenshots because answers can change and links can disappear. A screenshot log also lets another person review subjective fields such as sentiment and accuracy.

Step 5: Calculate Five Useful Metrics

Do not compress everything into one mysterious "visibility score." Report the components first.

1. Mention rate

Answers mentioning your brand / total valid answers x 100

If your brand appears in 7 of 30 answers, the mention rate is 23.3%.

2. Recommendation rate

Answers actively recommending your brand / total valid answers x 100

A factual mention is not automatically a recommendation. Keep these separate.

3. Citation rate

Answers citing your domain / searched answers x 100

Also calculate a broader citation rate that includes independent sources mentioning your brand. This shows whether ChatGPT trusts your site, third-party evidence, or neither.

4. Prompt-level share of voice

Your brand appearances / appearances by all tracked brands x 100

For a stricter measure, count each brand at most once per answer. Otherwise a long answer that repeats one competitor can distort the result.

5. Accuracy rate

Accurate brand descriptions / answers that mention your brand x 100

Treat "partly accurate" as its own diagnostic rather than forcing it into yes or no. A 50% mention rate with stale positioning can be worse than a 20% rate with accurate recommendations.

This is simple AI search tracking, but it is rigorous enough to reveal movement. For a basic ChatGPT brand tracking dashboard, chart the five metrics by month and prompt group. To extend the same method across Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and Google AI Mode or AI Overviews, keep the prompts and fields identical and change only the engine column.

How to Measure Brand Visibility in ChatGPT

Measure brand visibility in ChatGPT across three layers: presence, prominence, and proof.

LayerPass conditionWhat failure means
PresenceBrand appears for a relevant unbranded promptEntity or category association is weak
ProminenceBrand is recommended near the topCompetitors have stronger relevance or authority signals
ProofClaims are accurate and supported by citationsSource coverage is missing, weak, or outdated

Add a simple 0-3 score per answer if you need one chart for reporting:

  • 0 -- Absent: the brand is not mentioned.
  • 1 -- Present: the brand is named but not evaluated or recommended.
  • 2 -- Recommended: the brand is presented as a relevant option.
  • 3 -- Recommended and evidenced: the brand is recommended with an accurate explanation and at least one relevant citation.

Average the scores by prompt group, not only across the entire panel. A product might score well on alternative prompts and poorly on category discovery. That difference tells you what to fix.

Use a four-week rolling view once you have enough observations. Generative results are samples, not fixed rankings. One missing mention is noise; a sustained decline across the same prompt panel is a signal.

How Often Should You Track ChatGPT Mentions?

For most early-stage companies, use this cadence:

  • Monthly: run the complete 15-prompt panel twice.
  • Weekly: run the five highest-intent prompts once after a major launch or content push.
  • Immediately: retest affected prompts after a serious factual error, rebrand, pricing change, or crawler fix.
  • Quarterly: review the prompt panel and create a new version if buyer language or your category has changed.

Never rewrite an old prompt in place. Retire it and add a new prompt ID so your historical comparison remains valid.

How to Track AI Search Engine Citations

To track AI search engine citations, run current-information prompts with web search enabled, open every cited source, and record the source domain, page URL, claim supported, publication date, and whether the citation actually supports the answer.

OpenAI explains that ChatGPT can search the web and return links to relevant sources. A citation is therefore observable, but it is not automatically correct. Your audit should distinguish four cases:

  1. Your domain is cited. Record the exact landing page, not just the root domain.
  2. A third party is cited for your brand. Note whether it is a review site, listicle, directory, forum, news article, or competitor page.
  3. Your brand is mentioned without a citation. Mark the source as unknown; do not guess that it came from training data.
  4. The citation does not support the claim. Flag it as a citation mismatch.

This is the core of how to track AI search engine citations without software. Over time, group cited URLs by domain and page type. You will see which sources repeatedly shape the answer and which claims lack reliable support.

ChatGPT search referral links include utm_source=chatgpt.com, according to OpenAI's publisher FAQ. Check GA4 for traffic with that source, but do not use referral traffic as a substitute for citation tracking. Many people will read an answer without clicking, and some mentions contain no link.

Diagnose Missing Citations Before Rewriting Content

If your page is never cited, check whether the engines can retrieve it. Use the free AI crawler checker to test OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Googlebot, and other agents against your robots.txt, response headers, and meta robots rules.

OpenAI's crawler documentation separates its robots by purpose. OAI-SearchBot supports search discovery, GPTBot relates to potential model training, and ChatGPT-User may visit a page in response to a user request. Allowing one does not imply that the others are allowed, and crawler access does not guarantee a mention or citation.

If the rules are confusing, use this robots.txt guide for AI crawlers. You can also add an llms.txt file to present important resources clearly, but treat it as a supplementary discovery aid, not a ranking switch. This guide explains what llms.txt does and does not do, and the free llms.txt generator can create a starter file.

How to Monitor AI Search Visibility Beyond ChatGPT

The same free framework works for Perplexity, Google AI Mode or AI Overviews, Gemini, and Claude. This broader AI visibility tracking and LLM visibility tracking matters because each engine can retrieve, rank, and synthesise a different set of sources.

Use one workbook with a separate tab or engine column. Do not compare a searched ChatGPT answer with a non-searched Claude answer as though they are the same test. Log the mode, plan, model, location, and date.

For each engine, calculate:

  • mention rate by prompt group;
  • recommendation rate;
  • average position when present;
  • citation rate and top cited domains;
  • competitor share of voice;
  • sentiment and factual accuracy.

That answers "How do I track my presence in AI search?" with a reproducible system rather than occasional screenshots. It also prevents a common mistake: declaring victory because one engine mentioned the brand once.

For benchmarks on adoption, click behaviour, and the changing search journey, use the sourced AI search statistics. For the content structure that helps answer engines extract concise responses, see the AEO execution guide.

Common ChatGPT Brand Monitoring Mistakes

Testing Only Branded Prompts

"What is [brand]?" tells you whether ChatGPT can describe the company. It does not show whether a buyer will discover it. At least 80% of your prompt panel should be unbranded.

Running Every Prompt in One Conversation

Earlier messages shape later answers. Start a new Temporary Chat for each prompt so the comparison is cleaner.

Treating One Answer as a Ranking

ChatGPT outputs can vary between runs. Repeat prompts, record conditions, and evaluate trends across a panel.

Mixing Search and Non-Search Answers

A live searched answer and a model-only answer use different evidence conditions. Track them separately.

Counting Any Mention as Success

An appearance in a "not suitable for" paragraph is not equal to a top recommendation. Track mention, position, sentiment, accuracy, and citation independently.

Changing the Prompt Set Every Month

Prompt improvements are useful, but they break trend data. Version the panel and overlap old and new versions for one cycle.

Assuming llms.txt or Crawler Access Guarantees Visibility

Retrievability is only the first gate. A page can be crawlable yet lose to a more relevant, authoritative, or better-supported source.

When to Graduate to Paid AI Visibility Tools

The free method is enough when you track one brand, one market, and roughly 15 to 30 prompts monthly. It also forces you to understand what a useful measurement looks like before buying software.

Consider paid AI search tracking tools when you need:

  • hundreds or thousands of prompts;
  • daily monitoring across several engines and countries;
  • automatic competitor discovery and share-of-voice trends;
  • source-domain and citation clustering;
  • alerts for factual errors or sudden visibility loss;
  • role-based dashboards and exports for clients or leadership;
  • an audit trail without manual screenshots.

Do not buy a platform merely because it returns a single proprietary score. Ask how many runs it performs, which engine and model it uses, whether search is enabled, how it controls location and personalisation, and whether you can inspect the raw answer.

The right graduation point is operational: manual monitoring is taking too long or failing to catch changes that affect decisions. Until then, the scoring sheet is the better baseline.

Run a Free AEO and GEO Audit

If your baseline shows low mention rates, missing citations, or inaccurate positioning, run the free AEO and GEO audit. It checks the on-page and technical signals that affect whether answer engines can understand and reuse your content.

For a done-for-you diagnosis, I can turn the same prompt-panel method into an action plan covering technical access, citation gaps, entity consistency, answer-ready pages, and the third-party sources shaping your category. Work with me on GEO when the problem is no longer measurement but execution.

Final Checklist

To track brand mentions in ChatGPT for free:

  1. Define your category, audience, market, and real competitors.
  2. Build and version a 15-prompt buyer-intent panel.
  3. Run each prompt in a separate Temporary Chat.
  4. Keep the model, search mode, language, and location consistent.
  5. Repeat every prompt twice and save the raw answers.
  6. Score mentions, recommendations, position, sentiment, accuracy, and citations.
  7. Calculate mention rate, recommendation rate, citation rate, share of voice, and accuracy.
  8. Rerun the full panel monthly and compare like with like.
  9. Check crawler access and source gaps before rewriting pages blindly.
  10. Run the free AEO and GEO audit when you are ready to turn the baseline into fixes.

Your first score may be uncomfortable. Good. A truthful baseline is more useful than a dashboard that congratulates you. Run the same panel next month, and you will know whether your AI visibility work is changing what buyers actually see.

FAQs

How to See If AI Mentions Your Brand?+

Run 10 to 15 unbranded buyer prompts in separate clean sessions, then record whether your brand appears, its position, sentiment, accuracy, and citations. Repeat every prompt at least twice. Do not ask the AI to include your brand, because that invalidates the discovery test.

How Can I Monitor ChatGPT Brand Mentions Easily?+

Use a fixed prompt panel and a spreadsheet. Run the panel monthly in Temporary Chat, score each answer, and compare mention rate, recommendation rate, citation rate, accuracy, and competitor share of voice with the previous month.

How to Track Brand Mentions on ChatGPT?+

Define your category and audience, create realistic unbranded prompts, run each prompt in a fresh ChatGPT session, and log every answer. A mention is only one field; also record whether the brand was recommended and described accurately.

How to Check Brand Mentions in ChatGPT?+

Search with prompts a buyer would genuinely use, such as category shortlists, problem-led questions, alternatives, comparisons, and budget constraints. Add two branded prompts only to check factual accuracy and positioning.

How Can I See Brand Mentions in ChatGPT?+

Manually inspect generated answers or search the answer text for the exact brand name and common variants. Save a screenshot and record the answer date, model, search mode, prompt, and position so the observation can be audited later.

How to Measure Brand Visibility in ChatGPT?+

Measure presence, prominence, and proof. Report the percentage of answers that mention the brand, recommend it, cite its domain, describe it accurately, and place it ahead of or behind competitors.

How Do I Monitor ChatGPT Brand Mentions?+

Run a five-prompt high-intent check weekly and a complete 15-prompt panel monthly. Use identical wording and test conditions. Review four-week trends instead of reacting to one variable answer.

How to Monitor Brand Mentions in ChatGPT?+

Use Temporary Chat to reduce memory-based personalisation, run every prompt in a separate conversation, repeat the sample, and store the raw response or screenshot. Calculate metrics only after all scheduled runs are complete.

How Can You Track Brand Mentions in ChatGPT?+

You can track them for free with a named prompt set, consistent sampling cadence, and scoring sheet. Paid software automates scale, but the underlying measurement remains prompts, answers, mentions, recommendations, citations, and competitors.

How to Track ChatGPT Brand Mentions?+

Start with unbranded discovery prompts rather than 'What is my brand?' questions. If ChatGPT independently includes the company in a relevant shortlist, count the mention and then score its position, context, accuracy, and cited evidence.

How to Track Brand Presence in Generative AI?+

Run the same prompt panel across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and Google AI Mode or AI Overviews. Keep each engine's results separate, then compare mention rate, citation rate, and share of voice by engine and market.

How to Monitor Brand Visibility in AI?+

Choose the buyer prompts that matter commercially, establish a baseline, and repeat them on a fixed cadence. Monitor both direct mentions and the sources AI engines cite, because third-party pages often shape how a brand is described.

How to Track Brand Mentions in AI Answers?+

Save each answer as a row in a structured log. Use binary fields for mentioned, recommended, and cited; categorical fields for position, sentiment, and accuracy; and a notes field for unsupported or outdated claims.

What Does AI Say About My Brand?+

Ask two diagnostic questions: 'What does [brand] do, who is it for, and what are its limitations?' and 'Compare [brand] with [competitors] for [use case].' Verify every claim against current product information and record any hallucination or stale fact.

Is Free ChatGPT Monitoring Reliable?+

It is reliable enough for a directional baseline when prompts, sessions, model, location, and cadence are controlled. It is not a census of every answer shown to every user. Use repeated samples and trends, not a single response, to make decisions.
