IndexNow uses a simple ownership-by-hosting model. You upload a small text file to your domain root that contains a key, and search engines verify ownership by fetching that file.

Name the file exactly your-key.txt. The file's only content must be the key string itself.

Before any submission, the tool fetches https://{your-domain}/{your-key}.txt and confirms its contents exactly match the key you entered. If the file is missing, returns a non-200, or contains a different value, submission is blocked and you see the precise reason.
If you leave “Remember key on this browser” enabled, the key and sitemap URL live only in this browser’s localStorage. The server never persists them — they’re only used in-flight to verify the key file and make the submission. Toggle the option off or hit “Forget saved values” any time to clear local storage.
